facts & figures

anna saarinen
i was born on one of those endless summer days in the south of finland. handcrafts played a large role in my family: my mother was a weaving teacher and so we always had looms at home. my great-grandmother even took her loom with her to the presidential palace where she moved with the family when my great-grandfather was elected president of finland.
the combination of textile design as well as playing with colours and patterns are also my passion. too nordic design inspires me. while tradition guided me in the beginning, my designs have become simpler over the years. they have never lost their nordic flair.
many things have changed since i founded my manufactory. in the beginning, the idea was to sell my own collections. over the years, however, i have changed from a pure designer to a personal consultant, since i design most carpets in cooperation with my customers. as such, each carpet becomes a unique creation in its own right.
in my studio you can feel the influence of the north and the special light of finland is reflected in the available colours. when customers visit me in my showroom, they often ask me where i get my ideas from. they are everywhere: the dress of a woman passing by, an art exhibition, the colours of the sky in finnish summer.

the designs arise in my head. i see the carpet in front of me before i sit down at the loom – and then it changes through contact with the customer until it fits perfectly with where it will lie. 90 percent of all carpets are created this way.
that is why i appreciate very much when customers bring pictures of the place where the carpet will be laid. it is also helpful if the size of the carpet is already known
i look forward to being inspired by you!
our carpets: exclusive unique pieces, hand-woven to measure
my carpets are hand-woven on traditional looms in switzerland and finland. i design the exclusive unique pieces in zurich and weave a part of the collection myself in my atelier at neumarkt 3. the weaving studio integrated into my showroom brings finnish craftsmanship to the heart of zurich’s old town and thus nordic lifestyle to switzerland.
each carpet is unique and is made of pure cotton or a combination with linen or paper. the carpets can be used on both sides and are washable, depending on the size of the carpet even in the washing machine.
a carpet is created in several steps: the material is wound, cut, knotted, woven and sewn. i am often asked how long it takes to finish a carpet. i am happy to answer that: small carpets keep me busy for about three days, larger ones about a week.
this video shows how a handwoven carpet is created – from the setting up of the loom to the last hem.
prices / dimensions / colours
i work to measure. my carpets are unique, created in cooperation with customers. the maximum width is 270 cm (loom width). i am happy to consider individual colour requests. in my showroom in zurich there is also a large selection of already woven carpets that you can take away immediately.
i weave most of my carpets from cotton bands, which are a by-product of the textile industry. we have them collected, wound up and dyed in finland. using sustainable materials is of great concern to me. the choice of colours is large, the possibilities for combinations almost endless.
maintenance / washing
the carpets can be used and washed on both sides. regular vacuuming, shaking, beating and airing is good for your carpet.
direct sunlight causes discolouration and bleaching, avoid at all costs.
since the carpets are very densely woven and therefore stiff, washing in the machine is difficult. wash it by hand at a maximum of 30 degrees: moisten the carpet well with water on the floor or in the bathtub, then scrub with a brush and diluted detergent in the weaving direction. then rinse well with clear water. hang the carpet up to dry in the opposite weaving direction. do not lay it in the sun as this will bleach the colours.
with the right care your carpet will last for decades.
